Shapeshifters and Disguises is a show that brings together the work of five Seattle artists, weaving a single thread of storytelling, magic, and transformation by contrasting interpretations of fabled characters, Eastern European folklore, and costume design.

Transformation emerges in many forms: through garments that define a character, the simple act of wearing a mask, or through complete metamorphosis—from human to animal, from body to symbol, echoing rituals of fertility and mythic reinvention.

A collaborative project from the artists of CLUSTER. Working in sequence, each artist responds to journalistic prompts (who, what, when, where, why, how and so what) on a series of pieces that are handed off to another artist each month. None of the artists know how the final work will resolve until it is complete at the end of the 7 month process.

Each artist also made individual works using the same prompts, again, revealing them to one another only at the end of the process.

Chameleon

Feb. 3-28, 2025
This piece began as a personal reflection on the belief that there is safety in blending in. That may mean physical, psychological or even artistic safety. In recent weeks, another aspect of “hiding for safety” has come to the fore, as thousands of people, including children, have been put in very real jeopardy of deportation or separation from their families. The piece invites the viewer to consider the ways in which we meld with social norms in order not to be singled out.

Square Deal: 50 Artists for Democracy
Thursday, September 5, 2024

’57 Biscayne Artist Studios presents Square Deal: 50 Artists for Democracy, a fundraiser for the Movement Voter Project, an organization working hard to get out the critical swing-state vote this November.

The Square Deal is this:
Starting at 5pm on September 5, art lovers can donate $200 or more to Movement Voter Project through a dedicated link, screenshot their receipt, and pick out one of fifty 8-inch square works of art by fifty fabulous Seattle artists, made just for this show. Now that’s a deal!

The art will be displayed on the third floor of ’57 Biscayne, 110 Cherry Street during their First Thursday open studio event in Pioneer Square. The work will simultaneously be displayed in an online gallery. A link to the donation portal will appear on the online gallery page on September 5th, so donors can also participate from anywhere. Join the mailing list to get first notice when the portal goes live.
The in-person event runs from 5pm-8pm on Thursday, September 5. The gallery page and donation link will remain active until all the art is snatched up

More information on the cause is available at https://movement.vote/
