I’m excited to be returning for my second year teaching Shellac Plate Printmaking
through the non-profit Creative Arts Community
Shellac Plate Printmaking is a low-tech and versatile technique for creating both intaglio and collograph prints. Through demos and lots of hands-on work we will create shellac plate prints using a variety of techniques including “etching”, collograph, chine collé and shaped plates. Students will gain proficiency in a range of printmaking skills, culminating in a varied portfolio of work. This course is for both beginners and experienced printmakers looking to add a new technique to their repertoire. Instruction will be tailored to the experience level of the student and will include lots of demos as well as group discussions and individual coaching.
“Art is Healing” is the motto for 2023.
Creating art can relax and sooth us or it may enliven and stimulate us. The residential workshop is a time and place for reflection, artistic growth and a way to engage our whole selves by breaking from our daily demands to engage in art. “We need art to keep us healthy” “At CAC we believe that art making engages the body, mind and spirit. And that a retreat in our relaxing setting provides the support needed to emerge oneself fully in the practice of art.”
CAC is offering a full agenda of painting, drawing, printmaking, writing, ceramics, song writing, and collage classes in a beautiful retreat setting. Also included are these entertaining and fun things: meeting other artists, listening to evening presentations by instructors, swimming in the pool overlooking the gorge, shopping in the on-site gallery, eating delicious food with special dietary offerings, and hiking the trails.
Registration includes all meals and lodging.
No more than ten students per class; classes are expect to fill quickly.
Interested art makers, beginners through advanced, can register at: https://menucha.org/programs/creative-arts.

Weekend Workshop on Bainbridge Island:
Shellac Plate Printing
January 28 & 29, 2023
The BARN
8890 Three Tree Lane NE
Bainbridge Island, WA 98110
Shellac Plate printmaking is a low-tech and versatile technique for creating etching-like intaglio prints as well as subtly textured collographs. Through demos and lots of hands-on work we will create and print plates using shellac on an illustration board matrix. Students will be encouraged to experiment with the wide range of effects that can be achieved with shellac plates to express their own visual ideas and aesthetic.
Some printmaking experience is useful but is not necessary.
